Alexander Davidovich-Fokina is having one of the best weeks of his career. After disposing of Alexander Zverev in quick time, he has once again taken down a Grand Slam finalist in the form of Casper Ruud, 7-6(4), 4-6, 7-6(4), to reach the quarterfinals of the Canadian Open.
The first set was quite even, they held their serves throughout the set until the tie-break, where the player from Malaga was superior and won by 7-4.
The second set started strong for the Norwegian, with an early break. The match had to be stopped for a few minutes due to rain, and when Davidovich-Fokina returned, he recovered the lost break. However, the world number 5 counterattacked and broke his serve at the best moment to win the set.
The third set was on track to be a copy of the second. However, when Ruud was serving to take the match, the Spaniard prevented it and they went back to the tie-break, where again the world number 37 was on top.
In the quarterfinals he will face Mackenzie McDonald, who defeated Milos Raonic in the third round, the local hero, by two sets both 6-3.
