Novak
Djokovic finds himself two sets down at yhe
US Open against
Laslo Djere, who capitalized on
his opportunities to lead 6-4, 6-4.
Djokovic had the worst possible start against his compatriot Laslo Djere. In
the first two sets, Djere was relentless with his serve and didn't allow 'Nole'
to convert the chances he had.
On the
other hand, the 32nd seed secured a break in each set to take a 6-4, 6-4 lead. If the
score holds, it would be the first time Djokovic hasn't advanced past the third
round at the US Open since 2006. The Serbian
has come back to win 7 out of 33 matches he started by losing the first two
sets. The last time he accomplished this feat at Flushing Meadows was in 2011
against Roger Federer in the semifinals, a match that ended 6-7, 4-6, 6-3, 6-2,
7-5.
Djokovic amazing comeback
A
remarkable comeback by 'Nole' started from the third set, winning 69% of the
points played, including 60% of his opponent's service points.
With two
consecutive breaks, he took a commanding 5-0 lead, and although Djere defended
his service once, Djokovic was relentless, closing out the third set 6-1.
The fourth
set began evenly with both players securing a break. However, the World No. 2
applied more pressure on his opponent, and after losing his service only once
in the set, he managed to achieve three consecutive breaks, leveling the match
with a 6-1 scoreline once again.
In the
decisive set, the 23-time Grand Slam champion would once again display the
qualities that have kept him at the top for over 15 years. Djokovic completed
his comeback and took the lead from the beginning, thanks to his fifth
consecutive break, putting him 3-0 ahead.
Although
Djere defended his service on a couple of occasions, nothing could withstand
the caliber of his opponent, and Djokovic ultimately secured the match with a
score of 4-6, 4-6, 6-1, 6-1, 6-3.
In the
fourth round, he will face Borna Gojo, who advanced from the qualifiers and is
one of the surprises in the second week at Flushing Meadows.
