Novak
Djokovic achieves the record for the most Grand Slam tie-breaks won in a single
year during the match against
Hubert Hurkacz at
Wimbledon.
The Serbian
faced the world No. 18 today, against whom he holds a 5-0 head-to-head
advantage, in a match that had to be suspended due to the nighttime schedule.
As has happened in previous days, Wimbledon's organizers have an agreement with
the residents of the surrounding area to halt activities at 11 pm.
In the
match against the Polish player, both displayed virtually flawless serving,
offering few opportunities to their respective opponents. Djokovic was slightly
better in both sets and did not concede any break points, while Hurkacz faced
difficulties in the eighth game, where 'Nole' had four break opportunities but
failed to convert any of them.
The efficiency
of both players led to the playing of two tie-breaks today, and in both,
Djokovic's experience prevailed. Hurkacz had three set points in his favor but
squandered the opportunities, and the Serbian once again won a tie-break at a
Grand Slam, setting a new record in his career.
Djokovic
has now won a tie-break in each of his matches in the first three rounds, and
against Hurkacz, he won two more, totaling five at this Wimbledon. At the
French Open, 'Nole' played six tie-breaks and won them all, against Aleksandar
Kovacevic, Marlon Fucsovics, Alejandro Davidovich Fokina (two tie-breaks),
Karen Khachanov, and Casper Ruud in the final.
The Serbian
also won both tie-breaks against Stefanos Tsitsipas in the
Australian Open
final, and previously won one against Grigor Dimitrov. We have to go back to
the second round of the Australian Open to find the only tie-break lost by
Djokovic in a Grand Slam this year, when Frenchman Enzo Couacaud claimed the
tie-break of the second set by 7-6(5).
Tomorrow,
the match between Hubert Hurkacz and
Novak Djokovic will resume, in a duel
where neither player has conceded a break, and if it continues in the same
manner, we could potentially witness more tie-breaks between the Serbian and
the Polish player.
