Novak
Djokovic overcame third-round challenges and eliminated
Borna Gojo with a score
of 6-2, 7-5, 6-3, setting up a clash with Taylor Fritz in the
US Open
quarterfinals.
The 23-time
Grand Slam champion faced a tough third-round battle in Flushing Meadows. He
initially lost the first two sets against his compatriot, the 32nd seed Laslo
Djere, in Arthur Ashe Stadium.
However,
'Nole' brought out his best game to stage a remarkable comeback, winning 18 of
the next 23 games, resulting in a scoreline of 4-6, 4-6, 6-1, 6-1, 6-3.
Djokovic had comfortably sailed through the first two rounds, defeating
Alexandre Muller (6-0, 6-2, 6-3) and Bernabe Zapata Miralles (6-4, 6-1, 6-1).
In the
fourth round, he faced the world No. 105, Borna Gojo, who was making his debut
in the Grand Slam's round of 16. The Croatian player had successfully navigated
the qualifying rounds and secured consecutive victories against Hugo Dellien,
Mackenzie McDonald, and Jiri Vesely, all without dropping a set.
Djokovic
dominated from start to finish, securing an early break in the first game. With
the advantage on his side, 'Nole' secured another break in the fifth game and
held his service games to win the set 6-2. The Serbian player didn't give his
opponent any chances, winning 89% of his service points compared to Gojo's 50%.
In the
second set, the Croatian tried to be more aggressive in his returns, resulting
in him getting the first break in the second game. However, World No. 2
immediately recovered the break and then leveled the set at 5-5.
Gojo
eventually gave up his service in the first opportunity he provided to his
opponent, who clinched the set 7-5.
Despite
facing adversity, Gojo continued to compete in the third set, trying to shorten
the points by approaching the net. With the score tied at 3-3, Djokovic secured
a crucial break in the 4-3 game and comfortably held his service to close out
the match in three sets: 6-2, 7-5, 6-4.
Despite the
defeat, Gojo is set to achieve a career-high ranking in the top 80 after the
conclusion of the US Open. Djokovic will now face the world No. 9, Taylor
Fritz, in the quarterfinals, where he holds a 7-0 head-to-head advantage and
has faced him once before in a Grand Slam at the 2021 Australian Open.
