David Ferrer has revealed his desire to work with Carlos Alcaraz and Rafael Nadal in the Spanish Davis Cup team.
The Davis Cup captain of Spain has been in the role since late 2022 when he replaced Sergi Bruguera. The former world No. 3's next challenge is to lead the Davis Cup team after the US Open, and he has spoken about his experience with the team so far:
"It's hard to say [how the first few months as the captain have been] because I haven't officially debuted yet. I am watching matches, talking to the players and getting to know them, although I already knew many," he told on a interview with Marca.
In the team that will play at the end of this month, Ferrer has chosen Carlos Alcaraz, Roberto Bautista Agut, Marcel Granollers, and Alejandro Davidovich Fokin to complete the squad. Ferrer explained his selection of these players.
"Of course, of course [the list of four names I gave is clear], because it depends on each person's fitness level. I have tried to call up established tennis players like Alcaraz, Bautista, Granollers and Davidovich. Carreno [Busta] is not [in the team] due to injury," he said.
As he revealed, his dream is to have Nadal and Alcaraz team up to compete for the national team:
"Yes, without a doubt. But not only as captain but as a fan and also for the tournament. That this competition had these two world-class players," he said.
"Rafa is the best in the history of our country and one of the best ever. And Carlos is on his way to being one of them. I would love to have and live the opportunity to have both of them," he added.
Spain will be in Group C, competing against Serbia, the Czech Republic, and South Korea in Valencia. The system consist of two singles matches and one doubles match, all best of three sets.
