Elina
Svitolina revealed her intention to take a break from tournaments after being
eliminated from the
US Open.
The
Ukrainian world No. 26 recently exited the US Open in the third round after
losing 4-6, 6-4, 2-6 to world No. 3 Jessica Pegula. Svitolina defeated Anna
Lena Friedsam and Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova along the way.
Following
her match with Pegula, Svitolina revealed that she doesn't feel in good
physical condition and needs some time to recover.
“I am
satisfied with my level of play, but right now, I want to take a break to
rejuvenate physically and come back stronger,” Svitolina said
“When I am
in peak physical condition, I can challenge the top tennis players, and my
ranking will improve,” she added.
Svitolina
skipped the Cincinnati Open after her first-round exit at the Canadian Open
against Danielle Collins, losing 6-2, 6-2, to ensure she arrived at the US Open
in the best possible shape. The Ukrainian mentioned that she's not sure how
much rest time she will take:
“I’m not
sure exactly how much time I’ll require. I’ll follow the doctors’
recommendations. I’ll consult with my team and consider my next steps.”
“I intend
to take some time for recovery, and I haven’t seen my daughter in a while, so
I’m looking forward to returning home,” Svitolina concluded.
Former
world No. 3 doesn't have any points to defend for the rest of the season, so
she shouldn't have any issues staying near the top of the WTA Ranking.
Svitolina took a year-long break due to her pregnancy and returned in April at
Charleston.
The
significant number of points she accumulated in a short period is attributed to
her victory at the Estrasburgo Open, reaching the quarterfinals of the French
Open, the semifinals of Wimbledon, and now the third round at the US Open.
