Dominic Thiem will retire at the end of the season he has confirmed in an emotional retirement video after initial rumours rumbled for some time and were heightened over the past week.
Austrian media had confirmed that he had told sponsors that he was set to end his career, which his brother and manager Moritz Thiem had denied. But he pointed towards Thiem making an announcement himself which has now confirmed in a video on Friday morning.
After winning the US Open in 2020 after multiple Grand Slam finals, the tennis world seemed to be at the feet of the Austrian. But wrist problems meant that he had to go through surgery and his road back to the sport was fraught with poor form and simply not being the same player.
He already hinted at the move at the turn of the year saying that he would likely call it a day at the end of 2024 if he couldn't reach a certain point in the rankings. That has now been confirmed after multiple quite frankly humiliating losses to players inside the top 200. At the Estoril Open, he said that clicking in his wrist had returned and that he was going to slow down training.
But this was already close to the end for Thiem who confirmed that wrist problems were behind his retirement today. He also becomes the latest high profile name to call it a day. Andy Murray, Diego Schwartzman and Rafael Nadal are among those set to retire at the end of this season.
"I'm gonna finish my career at the end of this season," he said in his video. "My wrist is not at the way it should be and how I want it. I was thinking about this decision for a very long time"
