The first Davis Cup team of the post-Andy Murray era has been named. - Jack Draper - Cam Norrie - Dan Evans - Joe Salisbury - Neal Skupski Great Britain face Finland, Canada and Argentina in Manchester, 10-15 September.
The post Andy Murray era has begun for the Davis Cup team with Jack Draper and Cameron Norrie leading the way for their country at the Davis Cup in Manchester in September.
As well as Draper and Norrie, Dan Evans has also been included with the top three British men in the rankings set to feature. Doubles specialists Joe Salisbury and Neal Skupski have also been included in the five man team.
Captain Leon Smith can make up to three changes with of course the tie set to take place in September with injuries and illness potentially set to happen before then. As a result, Wimbledon men's doubles champion Henry Patten who mainly saw as being unfairly missed out could yet feature.
But it seems that Leon Smith has gone for proven quantities in Skupski and Salisbury over the likes of Patten who may have won the title but haven't done it at Davis Cup level. They hvae been drawn in Group D and face Finland on 13 September, Argentina on 15 September and Canada on 17 September at the AO Arena.
"We’ve got a really strong team once again and I’m sure it’s going to be another special week in Manchester," said captain Leon Smith.
A Britain team that also included Andy Murray reached the Quarter-Finals last year. They last won the Davis Cup in 2015 and they will be flanked in the women's edition, the Billie Jean King Cup by a Great Britain team led by Emma Raducanu and Katie Boulter likely.
So it is very much a moving on after Murray kind of time but also one that can be looked forward to with the talent that is on display in both ATP and WTA. A new golden generation or taking some time to get used to it? Time will tell but the first team of that new era is now confirmed.
