Having a career that has spanned 23 years, Roger Federer has had ample opportunity to evaluate his goals on the ATP Tour and determine what motivates him to keep playing.
The 20-time Grand Slam champion spoke with GQ Magazine, and revealed how his goals were constantly changing in order for him to stay motivated and keep playing at his best.
"You see this happening very often in sports, where you finally achieve your dream, and then the question is, can you keep pushing further?" Federer said in response to being asked what keeps him going. "You become number five in the world, now do you want to be number three? And then number one? Do you want to stay world number one?"
Furthermore, the Swiss Maestro stressed the importance of being happy on tour, and not letting the sometimes glamorous lifestyle get to his head.
"There is a lot at stake for points and money and fame and social media," added Federer. "Thankfully, I didn’t have to go through all that (early in his career). I’m glad that my upbringing on the Tour was a bit more of a normal one.”
Federer is set to make his return at Roland Garros, with the 2009 champion in the same half as long-time rivals Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic. The French Open kicks off on May 30 2021.
