Roger Federer has contemplated pulling out of the
Roland Garros in order to better prepare for the grass season.
Roger Federer won his marathon match against Dominik Koepfer in the early hours of Sunday after it lasted well over 3 hours with the starting time being 21:00 CET on Saturday. It was a very hard-fought match in which Federer outlasted a very inspired Koepfer. Following the match, Federer dropped a bit of a bombshell saying he might pull out of the event.
He said:
"I wasn't sure how much was left in the tank after the second set. It was a good fight. Will see how I feel tomorrow"
Reporters were a bit shocked by the statement so they asked for a follow-up and Federer explained:
"Every match here or Geneva I have to reassess the situation after the match and see in the morning how I wake up and how does the knee feel the next morning. So from that standpoint, it always goes like that. There is no difference after a match like this."
Federer finished off the interview by saying he did not expect to win three matches at Roland Garros. So it's not yet clear if Federer will step out for his match against Berrettini in R4.
That match is scheduled to be played on Monday and if Federer withdraws it will send Matteo Berrettini to his first
French Open quarterfinal.
