For the first time,
Jannik Sinner and
Carlos Alcaraz are the two top seeds in a Grand Slam, setting a youth record of nearly 20 years. The Italian and Spanish duo become the youngest pair of top seeds since Wimbledon 2006, when
Roger Federer and
Rafael Nadal led the field.
The rivalry between Sinner and Alcaraz has been ongoing for several years, and despite the Italian's three-month suspension, it remains as vibrant as ever, following a new showdown in the Rome Open final two weeks ago. "Carlitos" secured his fourth consecutive victory against Sinner, extending their head-to-head record to 7-4.
With this, Alcaraz climbed back to world No. 2, taking the position of second seed, only behind Sinner. This guarantees, even before the draw, that they can only face each other in a potential final. The Sinner-Alcaraz rivalry emulates Federer and Nadal as the youngest in 19 years, when Federer was 24 and Nadal 20 at Wimbledon 2006.
On that occasion, Federer (first seed) won the title, defeating his classic rival Nadal in the final. Fed's triumph marked his eighth Grand Slam title, while Nadal already had two
Roland Garros titles. This victory provided revenge for five consecutive defeats against the Spaniard – four of them in finals – and the last one being the Roland Garros final just a few weeks prior.
Following Federer's data, could this be a sign for what might happen at the
French Open this year? Sinner arrives in good form despite playing only one tournament, while Alcaraz is the defending champion and a strong favorite, following his titles at the Monte-Carlo Masters and Madrid Open (a record 15-1 on the clay-swing). Between them, they already accumulate seven major titles.
