Following his victory over home favorite
Taylor Fritz in the
US Open final on Sunday, former WTA World No.7 Chandra Rubin has jokingly stated that
Jannik Sinner should not be allowed back in America.
The rising Italian star resumed his dominance on the hard courts of North America, having lifted titles at the Miami Open and Cincinnati Masters earlier this year. Sinner added more points to his lead atop the ATP Rankings as World No.1, and appears to be a thorn in the side for American players.
Sinner dispatched of several American players during US Open title run
The 23-year old defeated American Mackenzie McDonald in the first round of the US Open, before ousting his compatriot Alex Michelson in the following round. Sinner would go on to eliminate 14th-seeded American Tommy Paul in the fourth round, before dismantling US native Taylor Fritz in the final. Sinner's victory ensured that America would have to wait another year for a male US player to lift the Flushing Meadows title in front of a home crowd.
In an appearance on the Tennis Channel Live Podcast, former American player Rubin jokingly made her feelings known about Sinner's dominance over her compatriots during her conversation with host Steve Weissman.
“I hate to say it, guys, but I think we are going to have to deport him,” said Weissman.
“He shouldn’t be allowed back in this country,” chimed in Rubin with a tongue-in-cheek response.
Having qualified for the year-ending ATP Finals in November, Sinner will look to add that distinguished trophy to his already impressive resume.
