Frances Tiafoe did not win a single match this week in Estoril without playing three sets and he did once more saving a couple of match points against
Sebastian Korda 4-6 7-6(2) 6-4.
Oh boy, what a match and how many twists and turns. Both of these players played some smashing tennis to arrive in the semifinal however won and played a lot more tennis to do so. Frances Tiafoe needed three sets in all of his matches to get to the final and he escaped quite a few times. He was down a break against Lajovic, he was down a break against Davidovich Fokina and each time he was able to come back and win the match.
Guess what he did today? Let's start at the beginning. He started well which was not the case often this week. He was up 3-1 as Korda struggled to find a good rhythm. Tiafoe was full of energy and he flew around the court. That slowed down towards the end of the set as Korda slowly took over with his precise shot-making. It was 6-4 and Tiafoe looked quite depleted.
After all, he played a marathon match not even 24 hours ago. This time around Korda was able to take a 5-2 lead which basically meant the match was over. But not for Tiafoe, the American battled back once again this week to take a 6-5 lead. He served for the set but got broken. Didn't matter as he came back to win in the tiebreak 7-2.
In the final set, he took an opening 3-0 lead. Korda battled back this time around but Tiafoe did not give up. He was determined to reach his 2nd career final in Estoril and he did it finishing it off with 6-4 in the end.
