Russia’s tennis star
Daniil Medvedev was visibly furious during
his defeat to Italy’s
Jannik Sinner in the Six Kings Cup. The 28-year-old suffered
a thumping defeat in the
Six Kings Slam contest to the world number one with a score
of 6-0, 6-3.
In that contest, Medvedev was visibly frustrated as he smashed
his racket five times. It is not the first time when the Russian tennis star
showed anger on the court. Previously, on a number of occasion, the one-time Grand
Slam winner has got into an argument with the chair umpire. In the Laver Cup
recently, Medvedev, who was part of the Team Europe, narrowly managed to escape
disqualification as he smashed his racket on the floor, which fortunately did not
hit anyone in the arena.
Team World players and captain John McEnroe complained to
the chair umpire and asked him to be disqualified but their request was denied.
Despite the defeat, Medvedev would go home very happy as he ended up earning as
much as $1.5 million to just participate in the event. The world number five is going through a mixed campaign. He
has won 45 out of 61 matches, suffering 16 defeats in the process. His most
recent appearance in an ATP event was in the Shanghai Masters, where he was
knocked out after losing in the quarterfinal to Sinner in straight sets with a score
of 6-1, 6-4.
Despite having a win percentage of 74, Medvedev has not managed to
lift a single title this year. In four Grand Slams, the Moscow-born star had a
decent time where he managed to play in the quarterfinal or beyond in three of
them. His most impressive performance this season in a major event came in the
Australian Open where he lost in the final to Sinner in a five-set thriller
with a score of 3-6, 3-6, 6-4, 6-4, 6-3.
