Jannik Sinner is the first semi-finalist at the 2024 Shanghai Masters after taking down Daniil Medvedev in a straight sets win on Thursday morning 6-1, 6-4.
Sinner lost their first six meetings but ever since his rise up the rankings into becoming the all conquering World No.1 and World Champion force he now is, he now sits at 7-7.
His only loss recently to Medvedev was at Wimbledon and that was quickly reversed at the US Open where the Italian added another notch to his belt. He now sets up a potential meeting with a certain Carlos Alcaraz in the semi-finals who takes on Tomas Machac also this morning.
But it is a 10th Masters semi-final and fifth of the year for Sinner who unlike his counterparts who have often complained about the scheduling has gone about his business in style. Leading the tour this season, he continues to show why he is the force to be reckoned with on the tour.`
It was sheer dominance for most of the contest with Sinner barely losing a point on his serve and breaking Medvedev twice en route to the opening set 6-1. The second was more of a back and forth affair with Sinner though sealing the break he needed.
He did so to make it 3-2 in a game which saw him take the only break point chance he was afforded. He went 4-2 up and from there, the only issue he had was closing out the match. He missed a match point and handed a break chance back to Medvedev but wasn't forced towards the tie-break as he took his chance from there. Dominant from the Italian ace.
Now a potential meeting again awaits with a familiar adversary who he lost the China Open final to in Carlos Alcaraz. Novak Djokovic then could be the final opponent given his current form and that open section of the draw so certainly food for thought for the great Italian in both of his games.
