Grigor Dimitrov battled past a solid
Stan Wawrinka 6-4 7-6(3) at the
Rome Open returning to winning ways after a few shaky outings in the past few events.
This year has been okay from Dimitrov but nothing that would impress or be comparable to some of his best outings. Rome has been solid for him in the past and he made a winning start by beating Stan Wawrinka in two sets. It was a competitive match but Dimitrov was clearly better in the opening set mainly thanks to his serve.
It allowed him to keep the rallies short and attack Wawrinka with ease which resulted in some quick rallies. He had 12 winners, four more than Wawrinka had a fewer errors which was enough for the 6-4 finish. The second set was far more competitive as Wawrinka managed to serve better which helped him the match close.
He was still broken early in the second set but managed to come back and force a tiebreak which wasn't really that close. When it mattered most, Dimitrov was able to come out on top and play his best tennis.
