Former world number one Martina Navratilova believes the consistency
of Serbia’s legendary tennis player
Novak Djokovic will never be surpassed.
The 36-year-old has made it through to another Grand Slam
final after beating America’s young sensation Ben Shelton in the semifinal of
the
US Open in straight sets with a score of 6-3, 6-2, 7-6 on Friday.
Navratilova, who won 18 Grand Slam titles in her illustrious
career including nine Wimbledon titles, while talking to Sky Sports, stated
that Djokovic’s consistency is unparalleled and it is nearly impossible to
surpass it for any player in the future.
“He has always been professional in his approach to the game
from when he was eight years old and that hasn’t changed,” said the
66-year-old. “He wants to improve, still wants to achieve more and the
consistency that he brings to the sport will not be surpassed.
“That’s how he plays the game as well – very, very
consistent. Novak has perfected peaking at the right time. He knows exactly
what works for him, what he needs to do. His game is so solid, technique is so
solid. He plays his way into form during the tournament. Physically and
emotionally he knows exactly how to manage himself.
“Novak’s been here so many times that emotionally he knows
what’s coming, mentally he knows what’s coming, it’s just a matter of staying
injury free and the game will be there. He has the perfect formula.”
Djokovic is arguably one of the greatest — if not the
greatest — players in the history of men’s singles tennis in the Open era having
won as many as 23 Grand Slam titles, most by any player.
He will face the world number three Russia’s Daniil Medvedev
in the final of the mega-event who booked his place in the grand finale after beating
the current world number one Spain’s Carlos Alcaraz in the semi-final with a
score of 7-6, 6-1, 3-6, 6-3.
