Former World No.1
Andy Roddick was one of thousands who was amazed by the determination shown by
Carlos Alcaraz, as the Spaniard made quick work of rival Jannik Sinner to lift the 2025
US Open title.
Alcaraz did not drop a set en route to the final, dispatching of opponents with relative ease. The 22-year old was on a mission, bring home the US Open title that he last claimed in 2022.
Standing in Alcaraz's way was Sinner, the World No.1 and defending champion. The Italian was almost as ruthless as Alcaraz en route to the final, dropping just two sets in his quest to retain the Flushing Meadows title.
Both men would be meeting in their third consecutive Grand Slam final this season. Alcaraz had prevailed in a five-set thriller at Roland Garros, where he had to fend off several match points before claiming the title. Conversely, Sinner would avenge his loss at the Wimbledon Championships, stunning Alcaraz in a four-set display of skill and precision.
Roddick praises both men but highlights Alcaraz's attacking style of play
Although Sinner was able to salvage a set, the outcome was never really in any doubt. Alcaraz was the better player during their encounter on Sunday, with the Spaniard dialing up his trademark aggressive style of play.
Roddick, who won the US Open in 2003, was flabbergasted at the level of play by both men during the tournament. However, the retired American pro was particularly impressed with Alcaraz.
In an impromptu episode of his Served with Andy Roddick Podcast, the former World No.1 expressed his admiration for Alcaraz's ability to change his style of play during the match. Despite excellent defense and counter-punching by Sinner, the Spaniard was able to adapt and employ a different strategy to use in conjunction with his brilliant offensive firepower.
"He has so much variety and also mid-match adjustments," said Roddick to his co-hosts. "He hits that slice early, Sinner adjusts. So Carlos just starts pounding the ball, anytime he had Sinner in a corner, he was in behind it.
"He was as aggressive coming forward as I've ever seen him before. And the athleticism is just off the charts."
