Matteo Berrettini called Novak Djokovic a cyborg for his longevity in the sport which sees the 24-time Grand Slam champion still playing at the highest level at 37.
Berrettini dropped into the live show of the Served podcast with Andy Roddick and spoke about Djokovic with high praise. He said that he gets goosebumps and doesn't believe he himself will reach 37 on the court.
But that is merely due to his chequered injury past which has seen Berrettini not be able to sustain his excellence in recent years due to injury. The Italian though has performed superbly as of late though. Capturing the ATP 250 title in Marrakech in April, he went on to seal both Gstaad and Kitzbuhel recently.
He was beaten though in the opening round in Cincinnati on Wednesday. Djokovic however will not be back in action until at least the US Open. After his gold medal exploits in Paris, he has decided instead to take a break.
He has instead been soaking up the adulation back home of his excellent gold medal run and as ever won't be back in action for some time after that.
“Talking about Novak and what he has achieved, it’s incredible I get goosebumps,” said Berrettini.
“I don’t know how he does it. He’s a cyborg because at 37 he’s still playing at this level. Personally, I don’t know if I’m still going to play at 37, given my injury history, I don’t know.”
