Alexander Zverev produced a stellar win as he took down Carlos Alcaraz to reach the 2024 Australian Open semi-finals. It was a first career Grand Slam top five win for the German who will now face off against Daniil Medvedev for a spot in a Grand Slam final.
For Alcaraz, it was a poor end to the tournament as he could've lost a lot easier with Zverev sealing it 6-1, 6-3, 6-7, 6-4 in the end and it will be either Novak Djokovic or Jannik Sinner for the victor who also play on Friday. The German though admitted post match that he overthought at 5-2 up in the third and threw it away so was glad to finish it off.
“I’m playing one of the best players in the world. Especially over the last 2 years.. He’s been number 1 or number 2. He’s won 2 grand slams. When you’re up 6-1 6-3 5-2 you start thinking. We’re all human. It’s a great honor to play guys like him. When you start winning, your brain starts going. It’s not always helpful… very happy to have finished the match," said Zverev.
But it is also a full circle moment for Sascha after recovering from injury to return to a Grand Slam semi-final. “It was a very difficult moment in my career and in general. Even if I would’ve lost that match against Rafa at Roland Garros.. it’s Rafa. Anything can happen. Obviously he’s won it 14 billion times. I think a lot of players have lost to him there. Having in the back of my mind that I needed to win 1 match in the next 3 months to become world #1.. that was the most painful part for me. I had to start over. I’m happy to be back in the top 10. I’m happy to be back in major semifinals. Hopefully playing for titles again.”
While next up is Daniil Medvedev and he had a simple statement surrounding that tie: "He’s been kicking my a** a lot over the last year or so.”
