Holger Rune
withdrew from the
Moselle Open after falling out of the race for a spot in the
ATP Finals. The Danish player had hoped to secure a place among the top eight
of the season but was required to win the title at the
Paris Masters.
As the
tournament progressed, Rune became a strong contender. With Carlos Alcaraz's
exit and the absences of Novak Djokovic and Jannik Sinner, the draw was open
and presented a good opportunity for those still hoping to qualify for the ATP
Finals. Rune defeated rivals like Ben Shelton and Alex De Minaur on his way to
the semifinals but was eliminated by eventual champion Alexander Zverev.
As a
result, Rune finished 13th in the Race with 3,025 points, well behind Alex De
Minaur, who currently holds the last spot for Turin with 3,745 points. The
Danish player was scheduled to compete at the Moselle Open starting this
Monday but decided to withdraw without giving official reasons.
The former
world No. 4 did not appear to have any physical issues in his match against
Zverev, which suggests he may have chosen to end his season early after losing
the incentive to fight for a place in the ATP Finals.
The
21-year-old has had a decent season, but consistency has been a challenge
throughout the year. Rune has struggled with stability in his team, starting
the year with Boris Becker, who only lasted a few months before Rune hired
Patrick Mouratoglou for a third time, which also did not yield results.
Recently, he added Lars Christensen, with whom he has had two previous
partnerships, and it seems they will continue working together in 2025.
