Holger Rune is set to break into the top 5 in the ATP singles rankings for the first time in his career following
Casper Ruud's defeat at the National Bank
Canadian Open in Toronto.
Current world No. 5 Ruud crashed out of the ATP Masters 1000 event in the Round of 16, with his opponent Alejandro Davidovich Fokina winning the match in three sets, 7-6 (4), 4-6, 7-6 (4).
As a result, the Norwegian will lose 270 points and will drop out of the top 5 when the rankings are updated on Monday, August 14, switching places with current world No. 6 Rune. Ironically, this comes after the Dane was knocked out of the same tournament in his opening round.
Rune's rise comes after first-round defeat
After receiving a bye in the Round of 64, Rune bowed out of the Round of 32, losing to qualifier Marcos Giron 6-2, 4-6, 6-3. Giron then went on to be defeated by twelfth seed Tommy Paul in the Round of 16.
However, Rune only lost 35 points from this defeat, meaning he now has 4790 points overall, in comparison to Ruud's 4715. This gives Rune a 75-point lead over Ruud.
The two men will now be fighting against each other, as well as Andrey Rublev and Stefanos Tsitsipas, to try and attain the world No. 4 spot ahead of the US Open.
Drop comes just a week after falling from No. 4
Ruud's drop out of the top 5 comes just a week after he lost the No. 4 position to Tsitsipas, following the Greek player's victory at the Los Cabos Open.
The latter half of the season has been tough for Ruud. The 24-year-old's strong dislike of grass courts put him at a disadvantage as he chose not to play any warm-up events ahead of Wimbledon, where he was defeated by world No. 142 Liam Broady in the second round.
