Holger Rune will reunite with
Patrick Mouratoglou effective immediately as his head coach after his documented split from Boris Becker and Severin Luthi last month.
Rune parted ways recently with Becker after leading him through the indoor season. While Luthi was his head coach during the Australian Open both amalgamating aspects of Novak Djokovic and Roger Federer after their long stints working with the pair.
But both cited time needed with Rune as the reason why they decided to quit and Mouratoglou as he has previously shown certainly has that to coach Rune. Knowing the Dane since he was 13, Mouratoglou coached him after stints with Serena Williams and Simona Halep with the latter concluding in the doping scandal which his Academy have since taken fault for. This was from October 2022 to August 2023.
There was a short pause between Miami and Monte-Carlo last year, with Mouratoglou helping him up to World Number Four last Summer. Amidst their split, he has always maintained the support of the Mouratoglou Academy and multiple trainers who were involved with him previously remained alongside Becker and Luthi. So it is very much the main Mouratoglou that is the returning piece of a familiar jigsaw puzzle.
During their first stint, he won in Stockholm and his famous triumph over Novak Djokovic in the Paris Masters final. Also he finished as runner-up in Rome and Monte-Carlo under his tutelage and now aims to recapture that.
“I am excited to resume working with Patrick,” Rune said in a statement. “With him I have achieved some of the greatest triumphs of my career so far, and I can’t wait for us to chase the next major titles together. Moving ahead, we have had good talks on how our collaboration should unfold, and we have agreed on a strong setup that creates the best conditions for my performance.”
“It is common knowledge that I am determined to win Grand Slam titles and reach that number one spot on the world ranking,” Rune said. “That requires the right coaching constellation and team surrounding me. Sometimes you must try a variety of things to find out what works – and what does not. In recent months, I have learned a lot about what works for me, and I believe Patrick is the best person to lead the team and help me achieve my goals.”
He will continue to have Kenneth Carlsen who was his Head Coach during the start of the season when Luthi and Becker couldn't travel by his side as well as Mike James who has long been an integral part in his Performance Analyst role.
“I am excited to start a new collaboration with Holger,” Mouratoglou said. “We have known each other since he was 13 years old and I always believed in his potential. He has high goals, and so do I for him. It is the start of a new adventure. See you guys in Acapulco, Indian Wells and Miami.”
