Milos
Raonic spoke prior to his debut at the
Canadian Open and expressed optimism
about his level of play.
The
32-year-old tennis player has struggled with injuries throughout his career and
is currently ranked as world No. 545, far from the top tier of the ATP tour. In
2023, he has only played in two tournaments, the Libema Open and Wimbledon,
with two wins against Miomir Kecmanovic and Dennis Novak and two losses.
Despite the
limited match play, Raonic is pleased with his current form and has prepared
for his home tournament by training with top-10 players like Daniil Medvedev,
Andrey Rublev, and Jannik Sinner. He is hoping to show a competitive
performance in front of his home crowd and make a strong impact in the Canadian
Open.
“I felt I
was able to do my things well,” Raonic said at press conference.
“I don't
feel I'm that far off from playing tennis that was reminiscent from two or
three years ago,”
“But it
doesn't mean that those things just click and transfer to matches. I still have
to continue working hard in those moments and hopefully those things do come
together,” he added.
In the last
two seasons,
Milos Raonic has been plagued by injuries, leading to a
significant decline in his ranking. He dropped out of the top 20 in 2021 and
even had no ranking at all in mid-2022 due to his limited play. The injuries
have greatly impacted his consistency on the ATP tour.
Raonic
received a wild card entry to the Canadian Open, and he has also scheduled to
compete in the Cincinnati Open and the US Open. In his home country, he reached
the final of the Canadian Open in 2013, but he was defeated by Rafael Nadal.
Similarly, he reached the final in Cincinnati in 2020 but fell short against
Novak Djokovic.
Indeed,
Milos Raonic's opening match in the Canadian Open will be a challenging one, as
he is set to face the 9th seed Frances Tiafoe. Tiafoe has had an impressive
year so far, clinching titles in both the Houston Open and Stuttgart Open.
