Tennis fans discussed the potential impact of Switzerland’s
Roger Federer’s retirement news on Spain’s legendary tennis star
Rafael Nadal in
a surprising loss in the
US Open in 2022.
The 42-year-old is regarded as one of the greatest players in
the history of men’s tennis in the Open era, having won as many as 20 Grand
Slam titles.
To celebrate the greatness of the Swiss legendary tennis
star, a documentary is set to be released. It will highlight the last 12 days that led him to announce his retirement. Federer announced his retirement from professional tennis
back in 2022 after struggling with form and fitness.
The documentary reportedly revealed that Federer told his close
friend and fiercest rival, Nadal, 10 days before eventually announcing that he would quit.
Interestingly, that was the same day the former world
number suffered a surprising defeat in the US Open to America’s Frances Tiafoe
with a score of 6-4, 4-6, 6-4, 6-3.
Roger Federer retired from tennis back in 2022.
Fans on the social media platform X—previously known as Twitter—discussed whether the result was the result of Nadal knowing the
development about a friend and a competitor.
"Federer told Nadal he will retire 10 days earlier than
the others. He announced his retirement on 15th Sep. He told Nadal on 5th
September. Nadal lost to Tiafoe on 5th September. This cannot be real, this
news broke Nadal, “one fan wrote. "Wow so Nadal at the time was dealing
with both his wife's pregnancy complications and also this news," another
fan wrote.
Federer was the first player in the history of men’s tennis in
the Open era to win more than 15 Grand Slams and the first player to win 20 or more Grand Slams.
As things stand, he is third in the list of players with the most Grand Slam titles in men’s tennis, only behind Novak Djokovic
and Nadal.
