Novak Djokovic expressed his excitement after becoming the champion of the 2023 French Open by defeating Casper Ruud 7-6(1), 6-3, 7-5 in the final.
Court Philippe Chatrier witnessed a historic moment for tennis on Sunday. Djokovic continues to etch his name at the pinnacle of the sport, securing his 23rd Grand Slam title, surpassing Rafael Nadal and becoming the sole record holder for the most major titles.
In his trophy acceptance speech following the match, 'Nole' spoke about his emotions upon achieving another Grand Slam victory:
“Obviously, Grand Slam is a Grand Slam. Four biggest tournaments that we have in the history of our sports and every single player dreams of being in this stage and winning the trophy at least once in their career. I am beyond fortunate in my life to win 23 times Grand Slams. It's an incredible incredible feeling.”
“It's not a coincidence that I've won 23rd Grand Slam title in Paris because this tournament is very much the hardest tournament to win for me all my career. Lots of reasons, on court and off court. And I have to say that I am very proud and happy to be here on this very special court,” Djokovic said.
The 36-year-old player will have the opportunity to increase his tally in a few weeks when Wimbledon begins. The Serbian starts as the favorite in the British tournament as the champion of the first two Slams of the year and the new world No. 1.
Furthermore, if he were to win another title at Wimbledon, he would equal Roger Federer's record of 8 trophies at the third Grand Slam of the year. Additionally, he would also match Margaret Court, the all-time leader in Grand Slam victories considering men and women.
