French tennis star
Gael Monfils has
expressed his disappointment after receiving criticism on social media for
his argument with Canada’s Felix Auger Aliassime.
The two are currently taking part
in the
Laver Cup in Vancouver, Canada, representing Team Europe and Team
World.
Monfils and Auger Aliassime were
involved in an argument during their match in competition which led to the
former being criticised on social media by a section of fans.
The 37-year-old was clearly unhappy
with that and released a detailed statement saying that he is ‘tired’ of
such controversies.
"I am tired of these incessant
and futile controversies,” he said. “Some people seem to get excited by
trifles. I'm annoyed by people who make hasty judgments. Some might think that
because I smile and have fun, I'm not serious. Of course, my vision may be
different, but I always try to follow the guidelines given to me. At 37 I'm
just trying to make the most of every moment."
The Paris-born is not having a
great time in the competition where he has lost in both encounters.
In the singles category, Monfils
lost to Auger Aliassime in straight sets with a score of 6-4, 6-3.
In the doubles category, he along
with Poland’s Hubert Hurkacz suffered a defeat to Auger Aliassime and America’s
Ben Shelton with a score of 7-5, 6-4.
