Denmark’s
Holger Rune has opened up about producing one of the
best shots of the tournament at the
Indian Wells. The 21-year-old, who is often
regarded as one of the most talented players currently playing on the tour, is
currently taking part at the Indian Wells, where he has booked his spot in the quarterfinal
after beating Greece’s
Stefanos Tsitsipas in straight sets with a score of 6-4,
6-4.
During the contest, Rune played a sublime shot, which many believed was one of the shots of the tournament. Talking about it after the match, the
youngster admitted that he was pleased with the shot as it ‘felt better’ on the
court but stated that he was disappointed with one aspect. Rune said that he thought
he looked like the former world number one Roger Federer while playing the shot, but he did not. He also highlighted the importance of that shot.
“I think it felt better on the court, actually, but it also
looked good on the phone, definitely,” he said. “I kind of, you know, had the
expectation that I looked like Roger Federer when I hit it, and I didn’t quite
do that. So that was disappointing, you know. Definitely felt better. That was
such an important moment. I saw him hit that lob and I was like, ‘go out, go
out, go out! It just clicked on the baseline and I thought, ‘what am I going to
do?’ The first instinct was just to hit the tweener. I hit it to try to make
it, but I didn’t expect it to land in… I hit that shot and it was just
unbelievable. I think it’s one of the better tweeners I’ve hit in my life.”
Rune is now set to face Netherlands’ Tallon Griekspoor in
the quarterfinal of the event. The 28-year-old cemented his spot in the
last-eight after beating Japan’s Yosuke Watanuki in the round of 16 in straight
sets with a score of 7-6, 6-1.
