Following the successful defense of his Australian Open title, Jannik Sinner has been touted as the next big name in tennis. However, Tony Godsick, agent of tennis legend Roger Federer, is unsure of whether the Italian can surpass the Swiss Maestro.
The World No.1 looked unstoppable during the two weeks in Melbourne. Sinner swept past Alexander Zverev in the final, capturing his second consecutive Australian Open trophy and increasing his total Major tally to three titles.
Although Sinner is yet to capture a Grand Slam title at Wimbledon or Roland Garros, the 23-year old is on the proper path to super stardom. He reached the semifinals at both Majors but has yet to advance to the final or win at either tournament.
Winning all the Grand Slams on the three surfaces is an important part of being included among the biggest legends in tennis history. In an interview with La Stampa, Godsick stated that although Sinner could not replace Federer or Rafael Nadal, the Italian shared some similarities with Federer.
"At the moment, as a global star, he cannot replace Federer or Nadal," said Godsick. "But he is loved by the people, he plays a type of tennis that I like a lot, and he knows how to give his best in the moments that matter.
"I don’t know if he can become a legend like Roger or Rafa, but he is on the right path… he is serious, very professional, he behaves well on the court and does not do stupid things off it… in this he reminds me of Roger."
Sinner's biggest obstacle stands in the form of Carlos Alcaraz, as the Spaniard won titles at the French Open and Wimbledon. Furthermore, the former World No.1 has a US Open title to his name, leaving the Australian Open as the only Major left before he completes a career Grand Slam.
