In a telling admission, Dominic Thiem said that he is no longer the player he was in 2020 once again and that he needs to accept his current situation after being dumped out of the 2024 Estoril Open.
Thiem sealed only a second win of the year against Maximillian Marterer, but then lost in an entertaining exchange to Richard Gasquet 6-4, 7-6. After the match, he took to social media platform X to reiterate his view from the previously days that he isn't the player he once was.
He said that while he still needs to find some rhythm, his wrist didn't have the level of strength that it had while he was at the height of his pomp back in 2020 when he won the US Open. Previously Thiem admitted that he could retire at the end of the year if he cannot find a ranking improvement on previous years. In four years, he has gone from tennis world at his feet to on the verge of finishing.
"Today's match wasn't bad, but I still need to find my game rhythm. As I said in my last interview, I'm not the player of 2020 anymore. I have to deal with the current situation, with the fact that my wrist doesn't give me the strength it used to," wrote Thiem.
"I have to be honest with myself. The pain is a lot less compared to the last few weeks, but like I said, I haven't regained my full strength."
