For the 2nd week in a row,
Dominic Thiem is in a quarterfinal with the most recent coming in Gstaad with a win over Federico Delbonis.
The good run for Thiem started in Bastad when he came back from a 0-2 deficit in the final set of his round one clash against Emil Ruusuvuori. After winning that match, Thiem defeated Bautista Agut before losing to Sebastian Baez in the quarterfinal. This time around he defeated Federico Delbonis for the Gstaad quarterfinal and it was a fairly close match.
The opening set was crucial for Thiem as he failed to hold on to a 5-2 lead giving Delbonis a chance to win the set. The Argentine almost took it being up 4-2 in the tiebreak but Thiem pulled through 8-6. He said:
“Every win is so important right now and I got a great energy from my box. They also knew that first set was crucial and the key to the match. I am coming from [reaching] the quarters in Bastad and I really wanted to back it up here in Gstaad. I have won two matches which means a lot to me right now. I really need those ranking points. Every match win is something very special.”
There is a good chance he might get the semifinal as he plays qualifier Juan Pablo Varrilas whom he can certainly beat as well.
