Serbian tennis superstar
Novak Djokovic finally captured the elusive gold medal at the
Olympic Games, and renown coach
Patrick Mouratoglou believes the former World No.1 was motivated in some fashion by long-time rival
Rafael Nadal.
Djokovic looked in great form as he battled past the likes of Matthew Ebden, Nadal himself and Stefanos Tsitsipas en route to facing Carlos Alcaraz in the final. The 24-time Grand Slam champion defeated his younger Spanish opponent in straight sets, finally adding Olympic gold to his resume at the age of 37.
Nadal's resurgence this season sparked Djokovic's competitive fire
The legendary Spaniard took some time off last season to recuperate from several injuries, before returning to the ATP Tour earlier this year. Mouratoglou believes Djokovic was motivated by not only his rival's return to the tour, but also the recent success of rising stars Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz.
"I think he [Novak Djokovic] really struggled with motivation until the Olympics," said Mouratoglou. "Everyone felt like it was the end for Rafa [Nadal], Novak felt it too. For sure, it hit his motivation really hard. But after that, Rafa came back on clay, his level was good and I think this gave extra motivation to Novak.
"[Jannik] Sinner started to play great, [Carlos] Alcaraz again, I think it touched his ego and he came back really strong and finally won the title that he was chasing for all his career, which was a gold medal at the Olympics to complete his collection of trophies."
