Australia’s Nick Kyrgios has confirmed that he is getting
closer to full fitness ahead of the Australian Open 2025. The first Grand Slam
of the year will begin in less than a week, and players from all over the
world will participate to showcase their talent and secure the ultimate prize.
Kyrgios, who has recently returned to the court after
spending nearly two years on the sidelines because of a wrist injury, has been
recently quoted in a report where he talked about his prospect of playing in
the upcoming mega-event. The Canberra-born star suffered a slight injury during
the recently concluded Brisbane International but confirmed that he will be
ready to feature in the tournament, and for that, he is ready to take a lot of
painkillers as well.
“I’m nearing 100 per cent to play,” he said as quoted by English
media outlet Daily Express. “I can take a lot of painkillers and try to tough
it out. It could be my last Australian Open and I don’t know how long I’ll be
coming to this amazing event. It’s one of the best events we have here. I’m not
going to take it for granted, I’ll do absolutely everything I can to get out
there. there’s still three days to go. If it’s not one thing it’s another. I’ve
done everything I possibly can to come back from a wrist reconstruction. It
grabbed in practice so the next couple of days will be pretty light.”
Kyrgios, who has been handed a direct entry to the main
round, has been drawn to face Britain’s number three Jacob Fearnley in the
round of 128. It will be the first-ever meeting between the two players. Kyrgios
will be desperate to have a good outing on home soil in a mega-event where
he has not played beyond the fourth round since 2015.
