Rafael Nadal looked very emotional during Federer's retirement ceremony and it wasn't only due to the magnitude of the moment.
The duo share a close friendship and he was very saddened to see his good friend leave the sport they both love. Their final tennis memory together will be a shared one as they played doubles together at the Laver Cup but unfortunately, they lost.
After crying heavily during the ceremony, Nadal opened up following the event admitting to dealing with a lot of private problems surrounding his wife's difficult pregnancy that even required hospitalization:
"I'm not okay, I'm not okay. The truth is that they have been difficult weeks in that sense. Little, very little, few hours of sleep, a little stress in general, situations a little more complicated than usual at home. Which, well, I've had to deal with all of that, which is a different pressure than what you're used to in professional life."
Nadal did not speak in depth but it became clear that the emotions were a result of the combined sadness that he experienced in the past couple of weeks. He did add a positive note:
"But well, luckily everything is fine, and we are much calmer. And in that sense, well, I was able to come here, which for me was the most important thing."
He did withdraw from the rest of the Laver Cup travelling back to Spain to be with his wife who is set to give birth soon.
