Stefanos
Tsitsipas amusingly explained his defeat against
Jannik Sinner's formidable
serve in their opening clash at the 2023
ATP Finals.
The
tournament's kickoff featured an enthralling battle between Sinner and
Tsitsipas, ultimately claimed by the Italian in front of his home crowd with a
scoreline of 6-4, 6-4. Sinner showcased an exceptional serve that proved nearly
impossible for the Greek to counter, as he didn't even manage a single break
opportunity throughout the match.
Following
the loss, Tsitsipas acknowledged in a press conference how challenging it was
to play against Sinner's serve. He won only ten points in ten service games of
his opponent and conceded his serve twice, allowing Sinner to seize the
victory. The 25-year-old Greek humorously drew a comparison to illustrate his
struggles when facing the Italian's serve.
“He definitely
has improved his serve and he showed it today on the court. There wasn’t much I
could do, I was trying to guess sometimes, but his serves were landing close to
the lines, to the corners and, you know I’m not the elastic girl from the
superheroes to be behind this balls,” he said.
“I tried my
best, and he played a very good quality match from his side,” Tsitsipas added.
Tsitsipas's
defeat places him at the bottom of the group now led by Jannik Sinner. The
head-to-head record stands at 5-3 in favor of Tsitsipas, although he has
suffered losses in their last two encounters, both in 2023 on indoor
hardcourts.
Despite the
setback at the start of the tournament, all is not lost for the former world
No. 3. He will need victories against Holger Rune and Novak Djokovic to stay
alive in the competition. It's worth noting that Tsitsipas couldn't progress
from the group stage in 2022, securing a win against Daniil Medvedev but facing
defeats against Djokovic and Rublev. As a result, he holds 500 points that he
must defend this week.
