Jannik Sinner in a group which features Novak Djokovic who will play later this evening is off the mark at the
ATP Finals after a straight sets success for the home hero in Turin over
Stefanos Tsitsipas.
Sinner of course this year heads into the ATP Finals in Turin anchoring home hopes and on both seeding and form was perhaps the favourite to join Djokovic through the group stage and it was a successful 6-4, 6-4 win over Tsitsipas.
It could be said that perhaps Tsitsipas was in-form coming into this week after a myriad of semi-final appearances in his last few tournaments. But he had to stop practices with injury fears so perhaps is going through the mill after facing an uphill battle to even reach Turin.
His incredible serve was evident throughout as he picked apart the Tsitsipas backhand going 6-4, 2-1 up with a break to head towards the finish and it was very much the tale of two breaks at 3-2 and 1-0 up in both sets.
For the rest of the opening set, neither came close to breaking each others serve while in the second set, Sinner was the only player who had further chances going 40-0 up on Tsitsipas' serve as the Greek had to show resolve and fight to quell the barrage.
That barrage though came down as Sinner surged to victory and in the process claims 200 ranking points and $390,000 just for sealing this opening win. Superb from Sinner with the turn of Djokovic now to follow that opening act.
He also improves his Head to Head record to 5-3 over Tsitsipas having won the last two matches they played against each other. Now he will get the winner of Rune or Djokovic in his second match.
