Five tie-breaks in two matches decided about important 2 points for Canada after Day 1 at the Davis Cup Finals in Madrid.
Vasek Pospisil was the first Candian start to shine on Monday. He defeated world number 12, Fabio Fognini in 2 sets. However, very difficult sets as both ended in tie-break. But at the end of the day, Pospisil delivered a point for his country.
It seemed as if 2 tie-breaks were not enough for the fans at the Stadium 2 in Madrid when Berrettini and Shapovalov delivered another one in their match. It was a 7-6, 6-7 and 7-6 victory of
Denis Shapovalov, which helped Canada to lead the Group F after first day.
Not being able to play, world number 21, Felix Auger-Aliassime was supporting his fellow countrymen Shapovalov and Pospisil also in doubles. However, Berrettini and Fognini showed that they are both part of TOP 15 in the world and won the point for Italy.
After successful day for Canada, Shapovalov said: “I’m really happy to get the win, and against such an amazing player as Matteo,” Shapovalov said. “He’s had such an unbelievable season and he’s playing some great tennis. It’s amazing to win the match, especially like this, in three tiebreak sets.
“After making semi-finals in the Madrid Open here and winning the Junior Davis Cup [in 2015], I feel like Madrid is a really good city for me, and for Felix as well. We’ll see how this week goes, but it’s a great step today.”
