The ATP
announced the 2023 ATP Tournaments of the Year, an award determined by the
votes of the players on the Tour, highlighting the best tournaments in the 250,
500, and 1000 categories. This year's winners are the ATP 250 Bastad Open, ATP
500 Queen’s Club Championship, and Masters 1000 BNP Paribas Open Indian Wells.
Coincidentally,
a tournament from each surface (hardcourt, grass, and clay) was honored, taking
into account players' opinions on facilities, food, organization, and amenities
at the tournaments. In the winning tournaments, Carlos Alcaraz secured two titles,
and Andrey Rublev won one.
Indian
Wells
Alcaraz won
the trophy at BNP Paribas Open Indian Wells, where he claimed his third Masters 1000 title of
his career in March during the 'Sunshine Double,' defeating Daniil Medvedev
6-3, 6-2. The tournament director, Tommy Haas, commented on the award: "We
are honored to see the ATP players vote Indian Wells again as their favorite
Masters 1000 level stop of the year. This award reflects the dedicated support
from all of our wonderful tournament staff, volunteers, staff and so many
others who bring the BNP Paribas Open to life every year and contribute to the
sustained success of one-of-a-kind event.”
Queen’s Club
During the
grass court season, the world No. 2 claimed the trophy at Queen's with a
victory over Alex de Minaur 6-4, 6-4. This was the only grass court preparation
tournament on the way to his Wimbledon title. The tournament's Digital,
Technology, and Events Director, Chris Pollard, expressed gratitude for the
recognition:
“We are
absolutely delighted to have been voted ATP 500 Tournament of the Year by the
players again this year. The LTA takes great pride in continuously improving
the experience of the players who take part in the tournament, and this award
is recognition of the hard work of the LTA event team and the collaborative way
in which they work with the Queen’s Club, the ATP and a number of sponsors and
suppliers to deliver a world-class event”,
Bastad Open
The third
tournament saw world No. 5 Andrey Rublev emerge as the champion in the 75th
anniversary of the Bastad Open. The Russian defeated Casper Ruud in the final
with a score of 7-6(3), 6-0, securing his 14th trophy and second of the year.
He expressed his happiness and pride: "The whole team and all volunteers
are extremely happy and proud to receive this award. Our ambition is to provide
all players with the highest quality of service both on and off the court
regardless of their ranking. We want all players to be treated as if they are
number 1."
“This award
is a proof that it has been appreciated by all the players who played the
Nordea Open this year and I would like to thank all the players for their
appreciation and welcome everyone back to Bastad 2024”, said Christer Hult, CEO
and Managing Director of the Nordea Open.”
