World number four
Daniil Medvedev has expressed
disappointment after hearing the news of Austrian tennis star
Dominic Thiem
retiring from the sport this year.
The 30-year-old recently announced on his official account
on the social media platform Instagram where he stated that he will retire from
the sport at the end of this season after failing to recover his best form
following a serious wrist injury.
"Hello everybody, I have to tell you a very important,
very sad but also a very beautiful message. The season 2024 is going to be my
last one. I'm going to finish my career at the end of this season," he said.
Medvedev was recently quoted in a report where he expressed
disappointment after seeing Thiem retire from the sport at such a young age.
"It's a pity to see him (Thiem) struggle after his
injury and never be able to come back to the level he was before,” he said. “I'm
sure, knowing him, he's going to be fine without tennis. He's going to have a
good life, happy life. I think that's the most important, so I wish him all the
best.”
Dominic Thiem recently announced that he will retire at the end of 2024 season.
Thiem was once rated as the player to compete with the likes
of Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal in the later stages of his career. He won
the US Open in 2020 after beating Germany’s Alexander Zverev in the final with
a score of 2–6, 4–6, 6–4, 6–3, 7–6. However, since then, he struggled with a
wrist injury which kept him out of action for a long time.
He returned to the action two years back but has never been
able to recover his lost form. It is because of this reason he has only been
able to play beyond the second round of a major event once which was back in
2021 in the Australian Open.
