With play currently suapended, Andy Murray vs Taylor Fritz in Washington has slipped to 3.20am in the schedule. Should have gone to bed.
Andy Murray has called late finishes at matches 'unacceptable' after having recently faced the prospect of a nightmare schedule at the DC Open.
Former world No. 1 Murray has certainly had a season of highs and lows. In many ways, the 36-year-old has been looking promising, with his first ATP title win since 2019 coming at the Aix-en-Provence Challenger event, and glimpses of his pre-injury form showing at various points.
However, he also had to deal with disappointment at Wimbledon, where he went out in the second round after a five-set thriller against Stefanos Tsitsipas.
Now, Murray has faced another second-round defeat at the DC Open against first-seeded player Taylor Fritz, but this loss may actually be somewhat of a relief as it means the Scot does not have to endure the tournament's difficult schedule.
After initially being set to take place on Thursday, his match against Fritz was postponed until yesterday, Friday, August 4, following adverse weather conditions. However, this delay meant that whoever emerged victorious would then have to play their quarter-final match later that same day.
Speaking after the match, Murray opened up about his thoughts on the schedule, as well as matches being pushed back and finishing late.
"Well, I could have done it. It just wouldn't have been very pretty, to be honest (smiling). You know, it's brutal conditions out there. That's obviously a long match."
However, he admitted that he wasn't sure what else the organisers could have done, given the weather conditions, to ensure all the matches were played.
"Yeah, I'm not really sure what else they can do in that situation," he said.
Nevertheless, the three-time Grand Slam champion added that sometimes, the delays went too far for his liking.
"You know, I have been in situations before here where the matches -- not just here but in other tournaments -- where the matches are finishing at, like, 2:00, 3:00 in the morning, and that also, for me, is unacceptable. So I'm not really sure what else you can do except, like, shorten the format or something if there is rain delays Yeah, I don't know."
