British star
Jack Draper kept his
Winston-Salem Open title quest alive on Wednesday night, defeating former World No.3
Dominic Thiem to reach the quarterfinals.
Draper scored an impressive 6-1 6-4 win over the 2020
US Open champion, effortlessly cruising through the match without even facing a break point. The 13th seed hit eight aces and won 85% of points behind his first serve, relying on precision rather than power to outplay his opponent.
The rising British star was excellent on his return of serve, attacking Thiem's second serve to five out of six of those points. After cruising through the first set, Draper faced a more inspired Thiem in the second. The Austrian showed some flashes of brilliance in keeping the score level till 4-4, when Draper obtained the crucial break before serving out the match after an hour and 20 minutes.
After such a monumental win over a former Grand Slam champion, Draper will look to keep his momentum heading into the quarterfinals where he faces the winner between 11th seed Ilya Ivashka and Swiss qualifier Marc-Andrea Huesler.
