Jack Draper achieved his highest-ever ranking this Monday after reaching the final of the Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships. The British No. 1 fell to Andrey Rublev 5-7, 7-5, 1-6, but earned a significant number of points that helped him take a step forward in the rankings.
The 23-year-old moved up three spots to World No. 12 with 3,000 points, just behind Stefanos Tsitsipas (3,005) and Tommy Paul (3,180), who currently holds the No. 10 position. Beyond that, Andrey Rublev has a solid lead with 3,670 points at No. 9.
Draper was originally scheduled to play this week in Dubai, but after a demanding week in Qatar, he decided to withdraw to recover properly ahead of Indian Wells and the Miami Open. As a result, he won’t be able to defend the 190 points he earned for reaching the Mexican Open semifinals last year, leaving him with 2,810 points.
At Indian Wells, Draper has only 10 points to defend from last year’s first-round exit against Christopher O’Connell. This means that by the end of the tournament, he is guaranteed to have at least 2,800 points, significantly closing the gap with Tsitsipas (2,815) and Paul (2,880), considering their own points to defend in the coming weeks.
This would leave Draper just 80 points behind the World No. 10, meaning a strong performance at Indian Wells could be enough to break into the ATP’s Top 10. However, Paul and Tsitsipas have an advantage, as the American is competing at the Acapulco Open this week, while the Greek has opted to play at the Dubai Open—both ATP 500 events.
Still, unless Paul and Tsitsipas reach at least the final this week, the three players will be locked in a fierce battle to finish the tournament inside the Top 10, where advancing just one extra round could make all the difference.
