Jannik Sinner (No. 3) doesn't disappoint and overcomes
Christopher O'Connell (No. 66) to reach the quarterfinals of the Miami Open. The Italian tennis player once again dominated his opponent, achieving a record of 19-1 in 2024 and reaching the quarterfinals of a Masters 1000 event for the 10th time in his career.
The first set started well for the Australian, who capitalized on Sinner's weak service game to quickly secure a break and take a 2-0 lead on his own serve. The 22-year-old's level of play steadily improved throughout the set, and despite O'Connell's resistance in saving some break points against him, he couldn't maintain consistency.
With the score at 4-2 in favor of the Australian, Sinner then went on a run of winning four consecutive games, including two breaks, to take the first set 6-4 after 58 minutes.
Building on the momentum from the first set, Sinner won three more consecutive games to secure a solid 3-0 lead. The young star was almost impeccable with his service, winning 92% of points on his first serve and 100% on his second.
Although O'Connell improved his effectiveness with his service, he couldn't trouble his opponent on the return. With the score at 5-2 in favor of Sinner, the Italian had a match point but couldn't convert it. Nevertheless, he closed out the victory from his service game and secured the win by 6-4, 6-3.
The Italian advances to the quarterfinals of the Miami Open and will face Czech player Tomas Machac (No. 60), who defeated Matteo Arnaldi (No. 38) by 6-3, 6-3 and is in the quarterfinals of a Masters 1000 event for the first time in his career.
