There has been a lot of talk surrounding the world number one
Jannik Sinner after the Italian went to hospital on a couple of occasions for medical checks amid his incredible collapse against Juan Manuel Cerundolo in the second round of the French Open. According to leaked medical results, there is 'no worrying signs.'
In a Grand Slam full of surprise results, this may have been the most crazy of them all. Sinner came into the tournament as the overwhelming favourite for glory. He was on a ridiculous 29-match winning streak following five consecutive Masters 1000 titles on the spin in 2026. With reigning champion and rival Carlos Alcaraz out through injury, it seemed almost inevitable that Sinner would complete the career Grand Slam in Paris.
While many tennis fans and pundits were almost certain about the fate of the ATP draw, they all jumped the gun. The Italian comfortably breezed past French wildcard Clement Tabur after dropping just eight sets. He would tackle Cerundolo in the second round.
Requesting for an earlier time slot, Sinner got his wish with the first match on Court Philippe Chatrier to be kicked off with an ATP match in three years. He was hoping to avoid the ruthless heat that could prove damaging. It is something that Sinner has failed to cope with in the past, and would be a small part of his downfall.
The signs looked good. It seemed a very comfortable win for the number one seed was on the cards when he stormed into a 5-1 lead in the third set. However, he would fail to serve it out twice as incredibly the Argentine won 18 points on the spin enroute to sweltering away the set and getting on the board.
Two 36-minute sets later both ended 6-1 in favour of Cerundolo who could not believe his luck as Sinner
failed to recover. He was hit with an illness that halted his progress, catching up to him with the compounding heat not doing much to raise his mood. A medical timeout was utilised but he was unable to muster up any response. It took the headlines as more concern and questions were raised.
Positive news as test results come back
In the wake of this, Sinner confirmed that he will not play in any grass tournaments in the build up to Wimbledon, where he is the reigning champion. To try and get to the bottom of all of this and in the off chance that there was something wrong, Sinner travelled to the J|Medical facility in Turin, home of Serie A side Juventus.
The all clear was confirmed, but his team wanted more conclusive evidence and asked for a second opinion and more
medical checks. They made the trip to Milan, more specifically the San Raffaele Hospital. He was seen leaving the building with cameras and citizens trying to capture a glimpse of the 24-year-old.
According to Corriere della Sera, Sinner spent four hours in the facilities on Monday. He was described as being "turned inside out” for “instrumental and functional tests, including a stress electrocardiogram, a Holter monitor, and a cardiac MRI”.
Jannik Sinner will set his sights on Wimbledon after the collapse at Roland Garros
He made the trip
back the next day to see a number of specialists but left at around 12:30 with an envelope containing the results of his tests. It was added by the Italian outlet that all was well. “According to leaks from his staff, the tests revealed no worrying signs. Nothing to prevent the tennis player from resuming training today [Wednesday].”
This is relieving news to everyone, most prominently Sinner and his team. However, this does not banish his woes in the blistering heat that has been mentioned on numerous occasions. With no planned events, he will get to work training on grass ahead of making the trip to SW19 as he still searches for a first Grand Slam in 2026.
There might be concern surrounding the limited grass court action this year ahead of the major tournament, but this can be debunked from last year. Sinner did enter the Halle Open but played in just two matches with eventual champion Alexander Bublik becoming the first player in 2025 that is not called Carlos Alcaraz to take him down. 11 days later, he would begin his Wimbledon campaign and not drop a set until the final, in which he won 3-1. With the Spaniard again not featuring, Sinner will again comeback as the big favourite for glory.
