Jannik Sinner was in a load of bother at last the recent French Open. The Italian was cruising in his second round matchup against Juan Manuel Cerundolo before he completely collapsed and went on to lose in five sets. He has since gone to the hospital for medical checks and to see what the issue was.
Many have guessed that it was the heat that was Sinner's undoing in Paris. He has been known not to be a big fan of the sweltering conditions that were dominating the headlines in the French capital over the first week.
However, that was not the case. The world number one was 6-3, 6-2, 5-1 ahead and serving it out before losing 16 points in a row as the Argentine levelled up the tie. He would soon
finish Sinner off in just over an hour of play, dropping two games in a huge surprise.
Sinner went into the tournament as the overwhelming favourite to complete the career Grand Slam and continue to add to his impressive win streak in 2026. After losing in the quarter-finals of the Qatar Open, he would go on to win five consecutive Masters 1000 tournaments while breaking all sorts of records and accolades in the process.
A lot of tennis has been played in this time but Sinner reaped the rewards and rightly so was the main man to beat at Roland Garros. In the end, his exit opened the door for Alexander Zverev to storm to glory for a first Grand Slam as Sinner's wait for a maiden major title on clay prolongs for at least another year.
Sinner goes to hospital for tests
After the match, Sinner described what happened. “I felt unwell, my head was spinning, and I had no more energy. Nothing was coming out,” he stated. “I tried to serve for the match, but I didn’t have much left. I let the fourth set go, then the first game of the fifth was tough, I couldn’t hold on anymore, and everything started going downhill. I felt it this morning. I didn’t sleep very well and was already struggling a bit when I woke up.”
According to Italian media, Sinner underwent a series of tests at J|Medical in Turin – Serie A club Juventus’ medical facility. This was last week before going on a short holiday with partner Laila Hasanovic.
Jannik Sinner lost in the second round of Roland Garros 2026
He has since
returned to hospital to undergo more tests, this time at the San Raffaele Hospital in Milan. He could be asked to come in once more depending on if he needs any scans.
He will dearly hope that it is nothing too serious and that he can enjoy this period away from court, resting and relaxing after what he has been an extremely busy 2026. He will next feature at Wimbledon, his first and only grass event of 2026.
Sinner was marvellous last year, defeating two-time champion Carlos Alcaraz in the final to pick up a first major title away from hardcourts. With the Spaniard again absent with a wrist injury, Sinner will be the big favourite to back up his triumph from last year as he looks to win a fifth Grand Slam, and a first in 2026.
