Jannik Sinner has withdrawn from the
European Open in Antwerp after a successful time on the Asian Swing.
It was revealed on the European Open's social media pages that the Italian player had decided to withdraw from the ATP 250 tournament for non-medical reasons.
It is likely that the 22-year-old is taking some time to rest after a busy few weeks on the Asian Swing. Sinner overcame ankle issues in his first-round match at the
China Open against Dan Evans to win 4-6, 6-7 (2), 6-3. He then proceeded to defeat Grigor Dimitrov despite throwing up in a bin mid-match.
He went on to oust top seed Carlos Alcaraz in straight sets before recording his first-ever win against Daniil Medvedev in the final to claim the ATP 500 title. As a result, he rose to World No. 4 in the ATP Ranking, becoming the highest-ranked Italian player since 1976 in the process.
Sinner currently preparing for ATP Finals
After Beijing, Sinner competed at the ATP 1000 Shanghai Masters, moving past Marcos Giron in straight sets and prevailing over Sebastian Baez in three sets before losing a closely contested three-set battle with nineteenth seed Ben Shelton.
His withdrawal from the European Open was likely informed by the fact that he has qualified for the 2023 Nitto ATP Finals, which will take place in Turin from November 12-19. Novak Djokovic, Alcaraz, and Medvedev are the other three players to have confirmed their qualification for the season-ending championship.
Meanwhile, the European Open will be held from October 15-22. Fans have reacted to the news of Sinner's withdrawal on X, formerly known as Twitter.
"I first saw him when I went to Antwerp in 2019, what a shame," wrote one
"So there's plenty of place to invite Belgian players !" commented another.
"WILDCARDS PLEASE!!!" added a third.
