World No. 1
Jannik Sinner managed to win a new ATP 1000 title on Sunday by defeating Novak Djokovic in the final. The Italian seems to have found the formula to trouble the Serb with his powerful serve, a blow that has been so devastating that Sinner has not faced break points against Nole in his last two matches, in the semis of the Australian Open and recently at the
Shanghai Masters.
In this last match, Sinner won with a score of 7-6(4), 6-3, consolidating his status as the best tennis player of the moment and leader of the ATP ranking.
With this victory, Sinner becomes the youngest player to win the Shanghai tournament since 2009, when it was first held. The Italian has achieved an impressive 65 wins and only 6 losses for the year, a 91.5% success rate. His record includes 7 titles among which three ATP 1000 and two Grand Slams stand out.
In Sunday's match, the world No. 1 was unbeatable on serve, forcing Djokovic to back off and take a more defensive stance. The Serb is the owner of a great return but Sinner always set the pace from his lethal serve, not giving his opponent a single break chance.
This is the second time Sinner has achieved this milestone against the greatest winner in the history of the Grand Slams. He had previously done it in the semifinals of the Australian Open, in that memorable 4-set victory.
No other player had managed to keep the break point opportunities generated by the Serb at 0 in consecutive victories, something that proves that the Italian deserves to be at the top of the ranking.
