Jannik Sinner returned to the tour just 10 days ago and continues to make history after reaching the final of the
Rome Open, following a three-month hiatus. The Italian has achieved 94 consecutive matches winning at least one set, placing him second on this list, only behind
Roger Federer.
Sinner's level of play and numbers since the second half of 2023 have made him one of the most dominant players in history when stepping onto the court. However, he is still far from Federer's streak: a practically unrepeatable total of 194 matches, more than double the second place.
There were doubts about the level Sinner would show upon his return to the Tour after 3 months away from high competition. However, it didn't take long for him to bring out his best level. After a couple of straightforward wins against Navone and De Jong, the first to force him to bring out his best tennis was Francisco Cerundolo, whom Sinner defeated in a tight match – again in straight sets.
Already in the quarterfinals, he swept aside none other than Casper Ruud, recent champion of the Madrid Open, ending his 9-match winning streak with a resounding 6-0, 6-1. In the semifinals, Sinner overcame a weak start against Tommy Paul and secured his place in the final with a 1-6, 6-0, 6-3 victory.
After finishing the first set, it seemed that the American could be the first man to defeat Sinner in straight sets after 18 months. The last time Sinner failed to win a set was back in the 2023 ATP Finals, when he lost to Novak Djokovic in the title match 6-3, 6-3.
Sinner is still a long way from reaching Federer's 194 matches winning at least one set, achieved during the Swiss player's most dominant era between 2004 and 2006.
In Federer's case, he was eliminated in the third round of Roland Garros 2004 by Gustavo Kuerten (4-6, 4-6, 4-6), and from his next match onwards – in Halle against Thomas Johansson – he began a streak of 194 matches winning at least one set, which ended at the Cincinnati Open 2006, when Andy Murray – at just 19 years old – defeated him in straight sets in the second round (7-5, 6-4).
