Former world no. 3 and the winner of 22 ATP titles, Juan Martin del Potro hasn't played since June 2019 after struggling with a severe right knee injury.
The 2009 US Open champion played on a high level in 2018, winning his first Masters 1000 title in Indian Wells following a thrilling victory over Roger Federer and reaching the US Open final later that year.
After many setbacks with wrist injuries and four surgeries, del Potro was ready to seek his goals and challenge the rivals from the top for the most notable titles, playing injury-free and with momentum.
That all changed in Shanghai 2018 when he injured the right knee against Borna Coric, struggling to make a comeback and hoping for a better run in 2019. Instead of that, Juan Martin experienced the same injury at Queen's 2019 against Denis Shapovalov, winning that match but withdrawing from the rest of the event and undergoing surgery a few days later. The Argentine needed two more operations in January and August 2020, failing to take the pain away and return to the court.
Almost two years since his last injury, Juan Martin will undergo the fourth knee surgery on Tuesday in Chicago, doing his best to extend his career and fight for the big titles again. Del Potro dreams about competing at the Tokyo Olympics this summer, eager to make a return and finish his tennis journey on his terms.
