Nick Kyrgios accidentally leaked that he as not going to be playing at the Tokyo Olympic Games by revealing that his next planned stop is the ATP tournament in Atlanta.
But he released a statement on Thursday evening revealing that he would not take part in Tokyo for multiple reasons. Those including the empty stadiums factor with fans now not allowed to attend in Tokyo.
He had previously discussed that this was a major factor in his decision. As well as taking the opportunity away potentially from a compatriot who was fit and ready to play especially after his Wimbledon withdrawal.
He wrote: "I just want to let you know I've decided to withdraw from the Olympics. It's a decision I didn't make lightly. It's been my dream to represent Australia at the Olympics and I know I may never get that opportunity again."
"But I also know myself. The thought of playing in front of empty stadiums doesn't sit right with me. It never has. I also wouldn't want to take an opportunity away from a healthy Aussie athlete ready to represent the country. I will also take all the time I need to get my body right.
"Good luck to all the Aussie's competing and I'll see you back on the court real soon."
